Tedesco: The lads should trust themselves more

Head coach Domenico Tedesco was satisfied with his side’s performance against Besiktas on Wednesday (19/07). The 31 year old said: “The lads had the right attitude and I demand that from them. They have my faith and should trust themselves more.”

The fact there were a few phases in which technical mistakes or mistakes in our build-up play were made, is nothing out of the ordinary at this stage of pre-season, according to Tedesco, who also noted that the conditions for the game were anything but easy. The thermometer read 30 degrees at kick-off (19:10 local time) and it was also very humid. “What’s important is that we get concentrated again after making mistakes,” the coach underlined, adding: “we put in a lot of effort and were disciplined. Our tactics as a team were good.”

Ralf Fährmann shared his boss’ feelings after the final whistle. “I’d like to pay a big complement to the team, because in these conditions it was anything other than easy,” explained the ‘keeper, who made a couple of good and important saves towards the end of the match. “Even if it was only a friendly, I’m angry about the goals we conceded. In the end, we were all lacking a bit of concentration due to the temperature.”

However, the coach and goalkeeper both enjoyed the three Royal Blue goals from Amine Harit, Luke Hemmerich and Yevhen Konoplyanka. “The goal to make it 1-0 from Weston McKennie was created very well. Both of the other goals were also impressive, as they came from a change in tempo,” said Tedesco. Fährmann added: “Week by week, we do more of what the coach wants us to. The three goals proved that, they didn't come about by accident.”

Bastian Oczipka is still yet to make an appearance for S04. Tedesco explained that the new signing from the Turkish champions “has had to deal with three changes of time zones. It would have made sense to let him play; the risk of injury would have been too high.” However, we may get to see the left-back against Inter Milan. “We still haven’t made every last decision,” said the coach. The encounter with the Milan giants is scheduled to kick off on Friday 21st at 19:30 local time (13:30 CEST) in Changzhou.
