Domenico Tedesco: Same performance but a different result

It’s tight in the Bundesliga from second to eleventh place. FC Schalke 04 and TSG 18999 Hoffenheim are right in the mix. Both sides need three points and clash on Saturday night as the Bundesliga’s headline game at 18:30 CET in the VELTINS Arena.

Domenico Tedesco doesn’t want to describe it as a six-pointer but he says “I know that only three points in this game is acceptable”. He wants to be celebrating Schalke gaining their first three points at home of the Rückrunde come the final whistle on Saturday evening.

Build upon good Munich performance

“We have to build upon our strong performance last weekend,” the head coach demanded of his troops after his team narrowly lost 2-1 in Munich. It was a solid performance but they left empty-handed. That was very similar to the game against TSG at the start of the season. “That was one of our best away performances of the season even though we lost 2-0,” reflected the coach. The 32-year-old wants to build upon these efforts and get a better result. Domenico Tedesco has lots of praise for Saturday evening’s opposition. “TSG have good players in lots of positions,” said Tedesco.

Domenico Tedesco has fond memories of Hoffenheim

Facing Hoffenheim is a trip down memory lane for Domenico Tedesco. Before coaching at Erzgebirge Aue, Tedesco worked as part of the youth team set-up in Hoffenheim.

“I had a great time at TSG and met some great people”, he reflected. “In Hoffenheim, they’re doing some incredible work.” Domenico Tedesco and Julian Nagelsmann know each other well not only from TSG but also the pair did their coaching badges together. “Julian and I have a lot of respect for one another,” he responded. “We speak on the phone and text each other.”

Max Meyer misses out through suspension

This week, the Knappen were unable to train with a full squad. Amine Harit and Yevhen Konoplyanka have been ill. It will depend on the remaining sessions whether either face TSG. Marko Pjaca has had knee issues but has been training still.

One player Domenico Tedesco will have to do without is Max Meyer. The U21 European Championship winner is ruled out due to suspension as he’s collected five yellow cards this season. “We have ideas as to how we can replace Max,” said the head coach. How exactly he intends to do that, he didn’t say. Furthermore, Weston McKennie and Pablo Insua are still out and are working their way back to full fitness. Matija Nastasic is back as he has returned from suspension.
