Max Meyer: We’re facing a strong team

Schalke travel to Amsterdam brimming with confidence from last weekend’s 4-1 win over Wolfsburg. “We want to impose ourselves on Ajax,” said Max Meyer ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash in Holland. “If you’re in the quarterfinal, of course you dream of going one round further.”

The Germany international is confident that his team can get a positive result in Amsterdam and set themselves up for the return leg a week later in Gelsenkirchen. “We need to play like we did against Wolfsburg,” said the 21-year-old and added, “We need to go onto the pitch as friends and give everything for each other.”

No extra motivation is required for the game. “We’re very focused in training and everyone is pumped up for the showdown with Ajax,” said Meyer. So far during my professional career, we’ve never reached a European quarterfinal. Therefore, there’s a lot of excitement ahead of these two games.”

The midfielder believes the Dutch record holders will be a very strong opponent. “Ajax have a lot of young players who are technically strong and also gritty, they like to play attacking football and are always good for a goal. We really need to be aware of that.” However, the Royal Blues will certainly not shy away from the challenge: “I also think Ajax will show us respect. We’ve played a number of good games in the Europa League this season.”
